Stories of Hope: Episode 10 - Nosonto Pretty Myaka
Nosonto “Pretty” Myaka’s story: Back in 2017, Pretty was given the opportunity to complete a Business Administration Learnership with Edge Training. In 2022, five years later, we caught up with Pretty as she was given the opportunity to complete a New Venture Creation Learnership. She shares her inspiring story of how she overcame bullying and learning disability to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams. She explains how she benefited from the learnerships offered by Geodis Wilson and Briggeman. “(00:24) Greetings, my name is Nosonto Pretty Myaka. I live in Chatsworth with my family, but originally I’m from Eastern Cape. Four years ago I had the privilege of doing a Business Administration learnership through Geodis Wilson. With the monthly stipend, I was able to save enough money to build a house for my family where we could run our family tuck shop. This was important for me because the tuck shop helped raise our family and brought in an income.
(01:09) Through working at the tuck shop, I have been inspired to start my own business and change my narrative. Growing up I was bullied because of my learning disability. I would make sure I was the first one off the taxi to avoid the other children calling me names. Every day I motivated myself to prove those people wrong and that I am greater than my disability.
(01:36) Last year I started my learnership in New Venture Creation, because of the monthly stipend, I have been able to start my own business. I buy and rebuild shacks for rental. The shacks in my community are in very bad condition, so I want to change that situation for the better. I’ve already rebuilt a shack into a house and plan to rebuild two other shacks. The New Venture Creation and Business Administration learnership has helped me to be prepared for running my own business in the future.
(02:36) My goal is to make sure I have a stable monthly income so that I can support my business and my family. I also want to expand my business so that I can keep helping my community and continue to change my narrative.
