Stories of Hope: Episode 3 - Michael Nzama
Michael Nzama’s story: Michael’s story starts a few months after overcoming his addiction and homelessness to find hope in life. He decided that it was time to start focusing on his health and well-being and began working on himself through rehabilitation and education. “(00:14) Hi I’m Michael Nzama, I’m 36 years old and I grew up in Inanda.
(00:23) Since 2012, I have been unemployed and living on the street and I didn’t have any hope or purpose in life. The goal was just to survive each day. The way I got through each day was to take drugs and drink alcohol.
(00:45) I heard about the gathering run by the Wellness Center that took place on Sundays at the park by Suncoast Casino, and I decide to go along and check it out. It was there that I met Eloise and things started to change for the good.
(01:11) It wasn’t long until I was offered to do a learnership through Edge Training. It was a learnership in Business Administration and this was sponsored by Bertling Logistics. Not only have I learnt how business run, but I have been taught valuable life skills along the way especially letting go of the things that will prevent us from moving forward in life.
(01:37) I was convicted at this point to try and sort out my addiction to drugs and alcohol. I was encouraged to attend recovery support group at Anthem Recovery. It was here that I have given the tools to deal with my addiction and I have currently been clean for 4 months. Seeing this group impacted my life, I knew I needed to get my friends who were also addicted to start coming. They did come and it has been rewarding to add value to the lives of others.
(02:15) It is so easy to let ourselves be defined by our pasts but I have learnt that it is not how you start but how you finish. I may not have had the best start, but I am determined to make the most of every opportunity thrown my way and make a success of my life.
(02:35) My goal is to have my own business, but more importantly I want to use my life to bring glory to God and to be a blessing to others.”
