Stories of Hope: Episode 15 - Nothando Mkhize
Nothando Mkhize’s story: She is former learner at Priontex (Pty) Ltd, a leading manufacturer of medical textiles in South Africa. Her personal and professional journey from growing up in a rural area to becoming a supervisor production administrator at Priontex, she expresses her gratitude to Edge Training and Priontex for sponsoring her Business Administration NQF 2 learnership and giving her a permanent position. “(00:36) My name is Nothando Mkhize, the eldest of three children’s, and I was born uMlazi, spent my formative years living with my grandmother at the farmstead in Umbumbulu, that is where I learned to walk, talk and everything else.
(00:56) After which I did my grade 1 at the farmstead before moving to stay with my mother at Durban where she worked. We were separated because she had to work, and my father passed away at a very young age. So we were reunited when I came this side to do my grade 2 at Clayhaven Primary School which is in Phoenix. After which I attended Ferndale Combined Secondary and that is where I did my grade 8 to grade 12 learning and that is where I matriculated.
(01:43) My mother’s boss and his wife sat me down to discuss my plans for the future, and they expressed that they had or wanted to fund my further education and training which I was very grateful for, and that is how I registered and entered into a higher learning institution in Durban central.
(02:15) I was contacted by an individual by name of Felix from Edge Training, and he had told me that I had received the learnership here at Priontex. So, that is when the journey started with Priontex and the facilitator from Edge Training uSisi, short for Sisimamile, a beautiful name. So, I really enjoyed my time doing my learnership because it was very informative, so, it was sort of like learning experience where I am physically learning what the facilitator is teaching me. So, I would experience something during the week, and I would also experience it in the learning module.
(03:20) My experience with Priontex has been amazing, it been a bumpy ride, there have been a few curveballs and I can proudly say that at the end of the learnership I have been given a permanent position as Supervisor Production Administrator. So, what that basically entails are, I take care of day to day running of our sterile production side of manufacturing and dispatching of our procedure packs, of our drapes and gowns that are used in theaters all over Durban. I also take care of our clients and their needs on our sterile side. I also do a lot of production sides admin. So any filing, any capturing, anything that has to do with production administration that is what is do as well.
(04:43) I would really like to thank Edge Training and Priontex for affording me this opportunity to learn and work, and it’s been a really great ride. I would like to give special thank to my facilitator uSisimamile, she really made then journey worth it and yes, thank you.
(05:06) For the future, I want to study, firstly by doing my B Tech, and climb the corporate ladder. Yes, that is what I plan to do. That is my aspiration.”
